  • Phase Changes, Melting Point, Heat | Elementary School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lesson Plan: Chocolate Changes Mark as Favorite (0 Favorites)

In this lesson, students will review what they know about the three states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas). They will perform a word sort about states of matter and discuss how substances can exist in more than one state of matter. Following this they will contribute to a KWL (Know, Want to know, Learned) chart. The teacher will conclude the lesson with a demonstration using chocolate.

  • Elements, Identifying an Unknown, Atomic Spectra, Emission Spectrum, Electromagnetic Spectrum, Emission Spectrum | Middle School, Elementary School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lesson Plan: Elements Are Out of This World Mark as Favorite (1 Favorite)

In this lesson, students will learn about the elements that make up Earth’s atmosphere and lithosphere and then compare and contrast the information with the elements that compose various other astronomical objects.

  • Temperature, History, Physical Properties, Measurements, SI Units, Accuracy | Elementary School, Middle School, High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Activity: Temperature Guys Video Questions Mark as Favorite (15 Favorites)

In this activity, students will watch a video and answer questions about how both the thermometer and the concept of temperature evolved over time

  • Temperature, Heat, Temperature | Elementary School, Middle School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Demonstration: An Uplifting Experience Mark as Favorite (0 Favorites)

In this demonstration, students will investigate what happens to air when it is heated.

  • Chemical Change, Exothermic & Endothermic | Elementary School, Middle School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Demonstration: Giant Toothpaste Mark as Favorite (6 Favorites)

In this demonstration, students will identify factors that indicate a chemical change has occurred while observing the production of giant toothpaste. This reaction uses simpler materials than those that are often used in the typical high school version of the Elephant’s toothpaste demonstration.

  • Conservation of Matter, Matter, Interdisciplinary, Renewable Energy | Elementary School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Reuse, Reduce and Recycle! Mark as Favorite (0 Favorites)

In this lab students will explore ways to conserve natural resources. They will then have the opportunity to create their own recycled paper that can be used in the classroom.

  • Phase Changes, Photosynthesis, Renewable Energy | Elementary School, Middle School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Mini Terrarium Mark as Favorite (1 Favorite)

In this lab, students will learn that even the smallest spaces can have their own climate. They will create a miniature sized terrarium and will observe how sunlight enters in order to warm the air, and in turn heat the soil and seeds. Condensation will build up in the container and the students can observe the water cycle in action, as well as the growth of the seeds over time.

  • Heat, Temperature, Temperature | Elementary School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Demonstration: Global Warming in a Jar Mark as Favorite (4 Favorites)

In this demonstration students will learn about the cause and effects of global warming. Students will research about global warming, while also comparing it to a demonstration. This will help students to better understand the effects that temperature change can have on the planet.

  • Chemical Change, Exothermic & Endothermic, Chemical Change, Physical Change, Separating Mixtures | Elementary School

Lab: Super Suds Mark as Favorite (2 Favorites)

In this lab, students will investigate an endothermic chemical reaction by combining baking soda, hand soap and citric acid. The students will be tasked with differentiating between chemical and physical changes during this experiment.

  • Temperature, History, Accuracy, Physical Properties | Elementary School, Middle School, High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Video: The Temperature Guys Video Mark as Favorite (32 Favorites)

This video tells the story of how temperature as we currently know it evolved. The first thermometers invented in the early 1600s are very different than ones we use today!

  • Heat of Combustion, Heat, Exothermic & Endothermic, Combustion | Elementary School, Middle School, High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Video: The Internal Combustion Engine Video Mark as Favorite (7 Favorites)

This video investigates both the mechanical and the chemical processes used in the internal combustion engine, as well as the history and evolution of the combustion engine.

  • Reduction, Oxidation, Redox Reaction, Catalysts, Activation Energy, Combustion | Elementary School, Middle School, High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Video: Catalytic Converters Video Mark as Favorite (5 Favorites)

This video investigates the role of a catalytic converter and its corresponding chemical reactions within a vehicle. Students will learn about both oxidation and reduction reactions and how they, in combination with a catalyst, can impact the molecules released in a car’s exhaust.

  • Electricity, Anode, Cathode, Galvanic Cells, Heat, Renewable Energy | Elementary School, Middle School, High School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Video: Alternative Fuels Video Mark as Favorite (3 Favorites)

This video analyzes alternatives to petroleum based fossil fuels, such as biofuels and hydrogen fuel cells.

  • Phase Changes, Physical Change, Observations, Temperature | Elementary School, Middle School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Lab: Condensation Mark as Favorite (0 Favorites)

In this lab, students will explore the process of condensation. Students will investigate how water vapor condenses, and then they will conduct a comparison test to see if cooling water vapor has an effect on the rate of condensation.

  • Chemical Change, Exothermic & Endothermic, Acid Base Reactions, Chemical Change | Elementary School

Access is an AACT member benefit. Demonstration: Comparing Chemical Reactions Mark as Favorite (2 Favorites)

In this demonstration, the teacher will perform two chemical reactions, one will be between acetic acid (vinegar) and sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and the other will be between Alka-Seltzer and water. Both reactions will produce gas and will be conducted in a Ziploc bag, causing it to inflate. Students will observe the reactions and analyze the results in order to understand indicators of chemical change. Students will also determine that these are both endothermic reactions based on their observations.
